Craig Marshall: Image Maker

4 Minute Warning
‘4 Minute Warning’, was originally inspired by Max Ernst’s painting: 'Ange du Foyer, (1937)’. I wanted to create an image that captured the flowing energy of life and death that I feel this work represented. When I think of the short time after the painting was created the Atomic Age dawned, the devastation of Nagasaki and it’s radioactive aftermath, the image has an untended signifier of mutation, of pain and destruction. This was the theme I perused, the theme of Nuclear and Biological warfare. Styled in a fantastical atmosphere of life and death. Around a person without obvious gender, dancing and moving through and to unheard music within this desolate landscape. The music behind the performance was chosen at the outset
ut the style of performance suggested, But the style of performance suggested, from the performer Suzie Cunningham, was Butoh. It was a beautiful fit to the theme and its heart, along with makeup design from Carrie Baxter. The results were beyond what I ever expected.
